The lure of entrepreneurship is strong. Many people dream of being their own boss, running their own business, and controlling their destiny. In fact, according to Gallup polls, a majority of Americans want to start their own business.
In the past few years, entrepreneurship and startups have become ever more popularized by the tech startup scene out of places like Silicon Valley. Startup businesses are so much more than venture backed apps and enterprise software however. Startups are contractors going out on their own to delight customers, accountants building a new practice, new breweries in your hometown, and more. We’ve worked with many burgeoning entrepreneurs over the past few years and we know what it is like to build something from the ground up because that’s what we did.
PipelineDeals was founded on May 6, 2006 and today is our 10th anniversary. We started in our co-founders’ spare bedrooms in suburban Philadelphia on the premise that salespeople needed great tools built for and by salespeople just like them. It hasn’t been easy and we’ve learned a lot this past decade. According to experts in both Inc. Magazine and Forbes, 96% of businesses will have failed in the first 10 years. In the tech industry, that mortality rate is even higher.
Starting a company is hard work and much of the work isn’t glamorous or sexy. It’s not ping pong tables in your office or million dollar payouts. Starting a company means working late on a Friday, struggling to make a decision because you just don’t have the time or money to do everything you want, and sacrificing time with your friends or family to grow something bigger than yourself. We’re proud that we’ve grown and thrived the past 10 years, and we’re humbled by the fact that we’ve helped thousands of businesses survive, grow, and thrive through the years.
Over the upcoming year, we plan on sharing lessons that we’ve learned on how to grow a business that’s built to last. We also plan on sharing stories from our longest term customers who’ve grown with us over the years. In fact, our first story will feature a company that (just like us) started in their founder’s spare bedroom 10 years ago and (just like us) has scaled to support a global business.
